This story shows what it is like for a sensitive adult to see things through the eyes of a child, and raises awareness of the callous attitude many can have towards the feelings of another. The Prince, a self-proclaimed idiot, claims to love both women and can't seem to rationalize his true feelings which most likely are nothing more than concern over making everybody but himself happy.
When Aglaia leaves him because of her pride and Nastasya abandons him as well, he could have made a break for it. But instead the story has a most tragic ending. Dostoyevsky certainly can create drama and his characters had me talking to them as I read, knowing good and well they couldn't heed my advice.
